PHD Blog 75 - Dawg on Handler(s)
Dawg Unleashed # 17
Handlers have it easier?
Maybe I am getting soft, but I feel I have some insight on what handlers face as they work with their dogs. As Dawg, I have talked to my pack and they agree that dogs have a tough time listening to cues while keeping track of stock.
Do handlers have it easier on the herding field? Or is it easier for us dogs as we struggle to juggle cues and ewes?
Lets look at the facts as I see them. As dogs, we have to keep track of stock and still be able and willing to go against our need to control that stock. That means we have to get out of our comfort zone and go against our natural instincts. Not easy!
Do handlers have it easier? I hate to admit it but, I think not. Let's look at what our BFF are facing.
First, they have to keep track of us. Now this is pretty easy as we dogs are so talented, graceful, and gorgeous that our BFFs naturally want to watch our every move. Honestly, they can't take their eyes off of us, which is no surprise considering how amazing we are.
Second, handlers have to keep track of the stock. This is less enthralling for our BFFs because, let's face it, no matter what kind of stock we are working, they are not nearly as compelling to watch as we dogs are. Fact!
Third, at times they need to move. We dogs know instinctively when and where to move when dealing with livestock, but handlers not so much. They struggle, really struggle, with giving cues and knowing when and where to move.
I get it, there is a lot going on at once. It can be overwhelming, frustrating, and discouraging. It can also be amazingly fun and satisfying. Getting from frustration to satisfaction takes time and experience, not to mention knowledge and patience.
No one does this alone! We are all in this together. All I can say is - lean on your friends, coaches, and mentors, but most of all trust yourself and do what feels right for you and your dog.
Have fun, stay safe, and watch out for those witchy sheep. We dogs walk every step of this journey by your side and when the day is over, win or lose, we will be your most loyal, faithful companions.
PS - If you do want to help your BFF with their herding journey, I know having my BFF's book Positive Herding 101 will make their path less rocky and much more fun!
