PHD Blog 62 - Flight Zone Revisited
Three zones in one
Let's break the flight zone into the flight, tight, & fight zones.
In previous blogs and Positive Herding 101 I have talked about the flight zone consisting of two parts, flight zone & fight zone. As I have thought more about how dogs apply pressure to the flight zone, I have come to realize that there is a zone between those two areas.
A dog doesn't move directly from the flight zone, with the stock happily moving away from the dog, into the fight zone, with the stock turning to fight the dog. There is a middle zone that I want to call the tight zone.
In the tight zone, the dog slows down and applies more pressure as the stock becomes more reluctant to move, but the dog doesn't apply so much pressure that the stock fights the dog.
Each of these zones is elastic and dynamic. The zones' areas and boundaries change, depending on the dog, the stock, and the situation. (Sorry, almost nothing is static in herding!)
