PHD Blog 64 - Power to the dog
Bite me!
Does your dog need a bite?
Bite or not? Most people don't like to talk about biting, especially if they work or trial on sheep or goats. They worry that a dog with a bite will injure stock or, when at a trial, will be disqualified for biting.
The problem is that sometimes your dog needs to bite, either to protect itself or to persuade reluctant stock to move away from your dog. A dog without a bite is defenseless against stock that comes after them or stock that refuses to move off.
The solution is a bite on cue. Having a dog that will bite on cue or bite to protect itself is a dog with confidence. This dog has a tool that they know gives them the upper hand with snotty livestock.
The best part is that when a dog has confidence, they usually don't need to bite! So in this video I am going to talk a little bit about types of bites and why we want to train a cued bite.
