Round pens - Why I don't use them
Was your dog introduced to stock in a round pen?
Many traditional trainers like to use a small round pen as the site for a dog's first interaction with livestock. I am not a big fan of round pens and don't use them.
Let's look at:
- What is a round pen?
- How are they used?
- Why don't I use them?
You may know that I train all herding skills away from livestock using tugs, treats, and cones. By the time my dogs interact with loose stock they have shown that they can engage with me and perform obedience behaviors near penned stock. Then I introduce herding skills around penned livestock before opening Pandora's box and releasing the stock.
